Jesus Is Full Of It

He is full of grace and truth. There are a couple of verses in the gospel of John that have fascinated me.

“And the Word (Jesus) became flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth.” John 1:14

“For the law was given through Moses, but grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.” John 1:17

Grace and truth. Off the cuff these two words seem like the odd couple. When I think of grace I see a ballerina floating across the floor. Grace seems soft, gentile, beautiful, no rough edges. Thinking of truth I see a gavel slamming down and the echo of oak on oak in a court room. Those are just accumulative feelings of experience and cultural influence.

There is some truth to those definitions but not ‘the whole truth’ as they would say with right hand resting on the bible. Grace does have in it simply an essence of ‘always welcome.’ Who would shun grace, really, no matter how it is defined. Truth is not always welcome but it will prevail as they say.

Jesus is full of both…grace and truth.

I am contemplating these concepts afresh.

What is your knee-jerk, off the cuff definition of grace and/or truth?

  1. Moments of grace, can come during the most gavel crashing life altering moments. I see and notice Grace as His gift, no matter that we like the gift, it works out better in hindsight, if we choose to look for it. I think that many do not know how to notice the Grace part and add the situation including it to the feel sorry for self cause I didn’t get what I wanted pile. Our own pour me (oh, wait maybe that one is only mine, it’s poor for everyone else?!) creates our own truth and not The Truth or His Truth.

Grace is the visitor when there is no food and no money and I’ve got to feed me and three kiddos for 3 more days before food money and I can’t eat wheat or cook with it…and I create the best meals with what is left in the dregs of my cupboards, or the Organic Farmer friends bring the remaining ingredients we need OR I have to take them to the soup kitchen and we meet a very scary looking fellow, that everyone shuns and he has the MOST amazing mind and lesson of wisdom to impart during dinner fellowship. My ability to notice such moments of gift and joy in the middle of my insides feeling smashed to bits by a hammer and to have tears of real gratitude for being able to notice them is Grace for me.

    1. Thank you Elisa, even as I begin studying the words grace and truth their definition fills out when placed in contextual experience. The meaning doesn’t change per se but pours into the bucket of understanding as we humans continue on our journey. Does that make sense? Thank you for your thoughts and openness.

  2. The first one…the ballerinas….:)

  3. Maybe a couple of parallel words might be Mercy and Justice. Not quite the same, but close. Justice is based on truth. Mercy comes about because of Grace.

    1. ah, that’s good Ann.
